What sparked your passion for design?
Growing up as an artist, I came to a cross road at around 18 where I asked the question – How can I use my hands and a computer, be artistic, work on inventive solutions to diverse problems and challenge myself while getting paid, and by process of elimination I had a eureka moment where I realised product design was for me.

How creative were you as a youngster?
I think I was stuck in the body of a renaissance man as a kid; I would use my mum’s old pastels, acrylics and watercolour and create landscapes you would expect an old solemn man in his attic to create! That genre was normal to me, and I loved it. And I had posters of Van Gogh’s works all over my room at 10

Do you come from a creative family?
My mother is a brilliant creator. My fondest memory as a child was rifling through mums old art college folder of sketches and projects from when she was 20. Dad is amazingly innovative with his hands, he’s a tinkerer, a workshop kind of guy, and I guess I have grown to attempt to emulate both these worlds.

Were they supportive of your desire to be a designer?
While the other kids were at soccer on Saturday, I was at art school. When I got to 14 and wanted to play Rugby League for a club Mum was petrified I would break my little ‘artist’ fingers. She was so encouraging about my talent and would always talk to me about the so many different fields of creative work I could go into when I grew up, because as a young kid it seemed the only thing to do with being a talented artist was be a Van Gogh and chop off my ear, or be an architect. It took some time as a kid to get my head around the fact that everything man-made we see and hold was designed by somebody at some point…There’d be plenty of room for me too!

What sort of education and training have you had?
Art classes as a child, then a full year art scholarship to Queensland Art Gallery at 13. Tried this thing called ‘Design’ at Tafe at 18, saw the light and never looked back. Went onto 4 years at Griffith University, Gold Coast in the Bachelor of Product Design.

Who did you want to work for when you first entered the industry?
Billabong. Turned out I ended up Design Manager for Billabong 5 years later.

Tell us about your first project and what do you feel about it now?
My first project while still at uni was at a surf apparel and accessory company. Using COREL (which I had never heard of because I was taught Ai). I had to CAD draw up 30 accessory pieces i.e. Bags, wallets, caps and belts for my boss because HE didn't know Corel, he only knew Ai, the irony! Sooo many nodes and powerclips aarrgghh! I had no idea how to be efficient with the program. Those cads if ever resurrected would be a minefield! But it taught me real quick how to use that program and got me the job. Soon after my boss left and I stepped up, by the time I left 4 years later lets just say the COREL CADS were remarkably more efficient.

What is your preferred software to work with and what has been the greatest advancement in technology over the past 5 years?
Ai. And 3dsMax, I really want to sway my time further into 3dsMax. The greatest advancement over the past 5 years has been social media and the ability now for so many people to create their own identities online with no prior web experience. And of course LiveTrace in Ai starting in Adobe CS2. What a treat!

Is digital technology going to eliminate the need for print?
No, never. If anything it will make print a premium, thoughtful and mature high-class medium to deliver content. And eventually print will stand for vintage and nostalgia. It will be the type of solution for a client who really wants to be remembered for understanding the true scope and history of quality design.

Whose work do you really admire and why?
Charles and Ray Eames for being the first to commercialise moulded plastics into beautiful furniture pieces. The Thonet Brothers for being the first to flat pack mass-produced furniture. Alex Trochut for his impeccable mix of artistic illustration into digital form and gradient work.

Who has been the greatest person that you’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and what have they taught you?
My first boss taught me all I needed to know about softgoods and accessories; he implanted passion and enthusiasm for soft goods into me through research methodologies and believed in my ability so much as to let me roll and experiment with various ideas. Then he vouched for me and still continues to today. Now we are both senior we promise to one day work on a project together.

How would you describe your work?
Diverse. I engage in Product, Graphic and Illustration with equal engaged enthusiasm and can draw upon many different creative experiences to execute a project. My work is usually quite fluid and often if the project permits I like to deliberately leave marks of creation as it creates a sense of authenticity.

What are your plans for the future?
Keep creating, keep challenging my intelligence by learning new things. Be involved in projects that make a difference, and do all this with as little impact on the environment as possible.

What sort of company would you like to work with next?
A company with a holistic measured and considered approach to design that works on projects that make the world a better place.

What is your opinion of Australian design?
Because of our lack of cultural heritage and sense of place I think Australians struggle to sometimes create unique meaningful design in the way that Europeans can. On the other hand this can be a blessing, as we tend to experiment with any and all genres from all corners of the globe. You can’t pinpoint what is quintessentially Australian design I think.

What is the best/worst thing about being a designer in Australia?
The point I made above probably sum it up. Just imagine, if you were walking out into some of the major city hubs everyday in Europe, being inspired by every tier of both 20th and 21st century design, everyday. The best thing is feeling part of a young cultural movement that in other parts of the world happened hundreds of years ago.

In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge the Australian design industry has to face in the near future?
Cohesion in numbers to establish a national force that communicate, collaborate and unify; it’s easy to feel isolated in some places of Australia as a designer. Also, free pitching – The ability for clients to find designers anywhere in the world through social media and global freelancing pitch sites is all too easy. And there are many parts of the world where designers will quite happily free pitch for a job, and also severely undercut the price of executing good design. Therefore the integrity of the industry is tarnished.

What is your creative outlet outside of design?
Surfing, Artwork.

What is the best designed bar in Brisbane?
The one with free wi-fi!

OK, So its quite obvious something has happened to me in the last 10 months that has stalled my efforts to update my blog. A job. A good one too, been working for Billabong as Design Director for Mens Accessories since i got back from Japan. I've sunk my teeth in good and proper, done the hard yards learning the history, the company, the potential and now im equipped - full of knowledge and ready to press into Summer 11 season confident im making inspiring functional product with a great iconic brand that has a story to tell.

Now, its time to reconnect with logging this visual, audible and oral diary. Its not that i haven't been connected, its just that i haven't logged what i have seen to my blog. TOYKO RIVER CRUISE AND HAMARIKYU PARK

One of those days we turn to trusty LonelyPlanet for guidance on what to do for the day. We found this great boat cruise that travels under 16 brightly coloured iron bridges as it makes its way to a drop off point at Hamarikyu Park. The park is a standout traditional Japanese garden right in the centre of Tokyo city with a a great photo op highrise background. I didnt spend much time experimenting with shots but got a hold of a couple of compositions here in the slideshow.

This festival steamrolled straight past our place on the weekend. The festival has no reason other than celebrating the Autumn colours and climate dawning, that's all it needs. We set up with some beers and Yakitori down in the 'garden' and watched the circus flow by. They put so much effort and passion into these festivals. Probably the most amazing thing my eyes have ever seen. Seriously, i was speechless travelling through this Aquarium I was like a little school girl as i skipped from tank to tank wooing and wowing. The Pacific Ocean Tank houses, two Whale Sharks, A Tiger Shark (we had a good sturn talking), A couple Hammerheads, Stingrays, MantaRays, Tuna and others. I couldn't leave, I want to go back. The animals had great enclosures, good housekeeping, and we all learnt about the creatures, understanding why its important to protect them. Good Aquariums are a good thing.

Capital of Temples and Shrines, enough to keep you walking for a week if you are keen. A couple of days did me just fine. Stunning scenery where you can easily loose yourself in the moment and imagine Ninjas in the bush poised to pounce and Monkey Magic you away. Sadly i never got to see a Ninja, but i did get a glimpse of a Geisha!

Industrial Port Mania! Osaka once was the capital of Japan and is arguably still the capital of import/ export transit. I love this stuff, reminds me of Transformers, and anything that reminds me of Transformers is killer in my books! Looming psychodelic machines dwarfed us as we took a harbour cruise in an old replica ship.

Tokyo has some of the most expensive land in the world, all of which is covered with soaring skyscrapers and bubble era architectural experiments. There is one mirage though, smack in the centre of the city on the map, taking up prime real estate with lush green lawns, motes, and 1000 year old castles. The Imperial Palace, still lived in by the Imperial Family, epitomizes the city of irony.

We had our beach tent set up down at Kugenuma the other day, and as the afternoon sun crested behind its spot adjacent to Mt Fuji, the scene was set for a spectacular sunset. Becky took these shots with my camera, she really captured the essence; Bongo player in the distance, surfers tranquilly sharing the sea. Unforgettable.

YOKOHAMA Y150 ANNIVERSARY

The Y150 anniversary celebrates Yokohama's Port being open and running strong for the last 150 years. The port is hosting its own little expo, with different futuristic exhibits, my favourite of which by far was the Nissan future exhibit. Will we all be driving around in cars like this ? Other than the baby blue 2pak i think so! How do you park ? The wheels turn..not the car, and you slide right in!

SAILING ENOSHIMA

We had a great opportunity to sail the seas with a Japanese friend of mine the other week. Its was windy as hell as rocky as a rollercoaster, but it was the first time for Becky and I to be on a proper sailing boat. Enoshima area is where the sailing was held in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and the dream lives on with hundreds of craft venturing out everyday from harbour.

KINGYOSUKOI FESTIVAL FUJISAWA

"Kingyo" means gold fish, and "sukoi" game, i think !! Anyway, this festival was right out front of our doorstep the other weekend. The trough is 80m long, a world record, the game is to fish the slippery little suckers out using a paper that tends to break at sight of water, hence the catch. Excuse the pun! So we caught 13 all together, brought them home, made a nice little tank aquarium fit for a King Koi, only to have them die one by one day by day consecutively for the proceeding week! Looks like im just not fit to have kids right!

ENOSHIMA ISLAND VIEW FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE

The more we explore the intricacies of this Shonan area the better it keeps getting. I went to a party on under the lighthouse last weekend, a full beachhouse dance party. The view was awesome up there, especially uptop of the lighthouse. You can see right back to our place, over to Yokohama, and off to Mt. Fuji. This area is a real gem.

I was lucky enough to witness this solar eclipse. I took this shot (heavily cropped) from a perch point at Shichirigahama Beach. The clouds generously parted for a few minutes to reveal the hidden phenomenon beneath! We didn't fall into darkness though, like my mind drifted into fantasizing about!

In Japan, on a public holiday called "Marine Day" everyone took advantage of a beautiful temperature and a bit of swell on the ocean to get their gear off and hang down the beach. I keep seeing this outlet, just near Kamakura, it flows into the ocean. The green moss makes it really cool. I took this shot by placing my polaroid ray bans in front of my camera lens, makes the capture of seeing through the water to highlight the grid bottom of the creek.

TSUJIDO AND ENOSHIMA SHOTS

I have found the rustic side of beachlife Japan, only a kilometre down from where i went everyday. Tsujido beach is much more like Australian country beaches. The park also made for some great shots of a cobweb labyrinth housing numerous critters. I also found some deserted public housing apartments, more like a stereotypical Russian vision. The land here is worth millions, right on the beach, housing around it sells for a mint.

The cruise harbour in Yokohama is by far the most creative use of space i have ever seen. You walk over the whole complex undulating between grass and decking. Topped off with some fine industrial aluminium, all the while looking back on the most picteresque major city in Japan.

Everyday i wake up and check Surfline.com. And almost everyday this is the forecast i get for my beaches where i live...1-2 foot, which is an exaggeration in itself, its not even 1 foot.

Sometimes i get optimistic so i check this site seakong.com only to witness 30 guys haggling for 1/2 foot dribblers !!arrghh!!. But when there's swell, its good i swear...it is!

YOKOHAMA SPIDER SHOTS

Yokohama City is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary. Every day the place is pumping with world class events. This spider is one of them. Over 20m high, it crawled through the park controlled by a bunch of french guys and girls. They take the spider all over the world showcasing their creepy crawly achievement. The spider was followed along by numerous cherry pickers orchestrating live music blasting across the harbour through massive speakers.

Yokohama Chinatown is one of the largest in the world. It sprawls across dozens of alleyways packed with chinese buns, soups, souvenirs and ultra vibrant shrines. Its funny because being in Japan I thought I wouldn't feel too different stepping into Chinatown, but I did, there's no denying the difference between crisp, modern Japan, and quintessentially Asian haggle Chinatown. Made for some nice shots, the colours in Chinatown are always so vibrant

Google are really throwing it out there no price attached these days. This software download is killer. I have used the heavy 3d rendering programs such as 3dsMAX but this is so much more simple and rational, for a quick conceptualising of space and perspective anyway.

One month down...it has been one month since the day we left our comfort zone, our home, our friends, family and sense of place and belonging. But i have not looked back, no need to, everything is 'going to plan', for want of a better phrase considering there never really was a plan. I feel that if we had pre-planned more, from home before we left, we would have been in much less desirable situations and surroundings than we are now. I feel that where we are now, in place, in time and in opportunities is on the best track possible.

Fujisawa, our home town, is an amazing little place, or should i say mini metropolis. Everyday i find something new within 5 minutes walking distance of my house that invigorates me. Today i browsed through the English section at the book shop. I methodically perused the titles as if they were the last sweets on the shelf of the only lolly shop left in the land. It was a moment of appreciation, that you know will help you be humbled and feel privileged when you next step into a native English bookstore. I found an awesome art supplies store last week, a hybrid, compressed and injected with a double shot of espresso version of eckersley's and officework's. I was rendered speechless when i found that the place sells more Posca Pen choices than i had ever imagined possible. I had to buy, i couldn't resist.

Yokohama; gearing up for its 150th anniversary, happens to be the second largest city in Japan, and is only 25 minutes on the train from home (Tokyo just another 30 more). The Big Yoke is jam packed full of life, and we were lucky enough on Saturday to stumble across the giant Spider Machine installation (see picture) and see this: http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-AU&brand=ninemsn&vid=5989137b-e810-47fb-8db4-2130773913cc , showing news footage from the exact time and day we were there. This thing was mammoth. Manned by over 50 people it hydraulically maneuvered its way through the promenade escorted by six cherry pickers housing an orchestrated band. It had an eirey sense of life to it that while in the context of the surroundings that modern Japan presents, is not far from believable. Only in Japan, or at least in big city life, could we have been fortunate enough to witness such an installation piece.

Today i painted the first surfboard in Japan. Typical flames, nothing too difficult for the client. There has been a good response to my artwork here. They are really excited to see the surfboard artwork in my folio and from what i can see no one else is doing it the way i do, so there should be a free meat market for me. A guy called Tenji Oda, a former pro longboarder runs about four surfshops down the beach, so stumbling into his surfshop with him being there at the time and capable of speaking english was a convenient surprise. He seems to think he will have plenty of work for me, and wants to take me surfing in his car too. So here i was today, in my ultra sleek little japanese apartment, pens sprawled across the floor, music on, painting a board, every so often reminding myself where i am that im getting paid a hell of alot more than what i charge to do this at home for.

Work is going great. I get paid two rates; the first is to hang out and just chat with japanese people in English over coffee. No pens and paper, no obligations, just keep the conversation rolling. My second higher rate of pay consists of two other more involved jobs..Adult lessons and kids lessons. Sometimes in groups of up to 5, sometimes one on one. In any case it requires a certain degree of engagement and concentration to 'defrag' your vocabulary from all the jargon and contextual words and phrases usually poised at the tip of your tongue. Not going to be of any use hear. I feel like im relearning English myself sometimes i.e im learning how to make really boring topics seem extremely interesting by dragging out simple english interpretions. With the kids, im a broken record, a really enthusiastic one, think of a Wiggle cross Krusty the clown on repeat. Its like a clowns groundhog day every day, repitition is the key to drumming the language into their brains.

A few quick notes...
• Internet TV is a vortex of endless selection, you want it, you can probably find it and watch it.
• My IPOD data was completely erased by my computers Itunes last week..call it SYNC, i call it STINK. Still not sure what happened, but its all gone, all10000songs, vidoes everything.
• Canon EOS 450D camera's feel like weightless soft silk in your hands when they are paid for Captain K. Rudd. Like any new technological funbag its gonna take a while to figure out though.
• Japan dont sell mobile phones, they sell multimedia starbursts, so full of fruity gizmos and gimmicks you get tooth decay from owning one. And they dont sell only the phone, you get 'Ken the Know it all Man' spend four hours practising his English on you explaining every last detail of the 'contract package'. His mates on six different loudspeakers all at once like to announce other offers the store can offer. Going into an electrical store here is like going into the casino. Nonetheless, it grabs and holds, and we signed up.
